Sponsor An Orphan In Need

For two decades, Iraqi children, and Iraqi communities in general, have been subjected to extreme human rights violations, as a result of war, foreign occupation and international sanctions.  Since 2003 thousands of children have been orphaned, and are suffering from illnesses as a result of malnutrition and poor living standards.  In 2012 UNICEF statistics, indicated that there are at least 800,000 orphans, and this figure increases daily with the ongoing strife in Iraq.

By sponsoring an orphan in need you will contribute towards alleviating the hardships and sufferings of orphans in Iraq, and ensure that their basic needs are met (such as clothing, food, shelter, medication, treatment and education).

At Shakiry Charity we encourage positive contacts between sponsors and orphans.  This is important for the orphan concerned, and also their families as it shows there is someone, somewhere in the world who cares about them and is interested in their wellbeing.

Our Sponsor an Orphan Project promotes and encourages monthly sponsorship of orphans living in Iraq.  Our aim is: 

to reach out and make a difference in a orphan’s life.

Sponsorship of an orphan costs £20 per month (approximately 65p per day). If you wish to sponsor an orphan for a lesser amount, we would be more than willing to discuss this with you, and see if we can top up the difference!  A minimum commitment of 12 months is required to provide continuity for the orphan concerned.

Monthly sponsorships reach each orphan through our network of Citizen Advice and Care Centres situated in Bayaa, Grayaat, Sadr City and Najaf.  Orphans and disabled children are registered with a centre, which monitors their needs and development and ensure that the monthly funds reach the intended recipient.  Regular home visits are made by representatives of the centres to check on the welfare of these children.
