Najaf - A deaf young girl is in need of financial support to pay for speech therapy following a cochlear transplant.
14/11/2014

Mariam Akeel Abdul-Hussain is a four years old girl who has been deaf since birth. With the help and guidance provided by representatives of the Citizens Care and Advice Centre (Najaf City) a surgical operation for a cochlear transplant in her ear was carried out for her, free of charge at a government hospital.

Following the operation, she now requires speech therapy to enable her to learn at school and lead a normal life in the future. However, there is no speech therapy institution in the city.

Mariam will therefore need a specialist teacher to teach her to speak at a cost of 10,000 IQD (approx £5) per lesson.  She requires 3 lessons per week, that is 12 lessons per month which will cost 120,000 IQD (approx £60) per month. She will need at least 6 months therapy to learn to speak.

The family’s financial situation does not allow for the provision of this amount of money to pay for the lessons. The mother of the child has again visited the Citizens Advice and Care Centre  in Najaf appealing for financial help to enable her to pay for the speech therapy lessons so that this little girl can lead a normal life.
