Ramadan Iftar Dinner Saturday 18th June 2016
13/07/2016

On 18th June 2016, during the holy month of Ramadan, Shakiry Charity for Social Solidarity hosted an Iftar dinner at Dar al Islam in Cricklewood.  Besides the honour of celebrating Iftar with the London community, this event was intended to create awareness and raise money to support the many needy and disadvantaged orphans, widows and poor families living under unimaginable circumstances in Iraq.

The ceremony was well attended by Iraqi families from within the Muslim community residing in the diaspora, as well as guests of honour and representatives from the Iraqi diplomacy who all praised the positive work Shakiry Charity is engaged in to create awareness and find practical, emotional as well as financial solutions to support the basic rights of those in need.

Mrs Worod Alaidani presided over the event.  The gathering commenced with short verses from the holy book, the Qur’an, read by Mustafa Akram.  This was followed by a religious speech from Sheikh Hassan Alturaiki about the importance and need for social solidarity during the month of Ramadan.

Later, the cultural councillor, Dr Hassan Alalak, delivered a speech about the importance of a positive co-operation between the rich and poor community groups.

Sheikh Zaki Alfailie, the director of Al Kurd Failien provided positive advice about the importance of working within the society for the betterment of all.

Later in the evening, Mr Abdul Sahib Shakiry, the Chairman and Founder of Shakiry Charity, provided a detailed recount of how the charity had progressed since its inception in 2006.  He highlighted the positive impact that the various programmes and projects had rendered in uplifting the lives of those in need, and outlined future plans to improve all segments of the society.

This was followed by a poem reading by Ms Ikram Hassan and the young lady Iman Albahrany.

The charity coordinator, Mrs Amaleed Alwan spoke in detail about how the charity programmes are implemented through the Citizen Care and Advice Centres in Iraq.  Particular reference was made to Najaf and central Basra Centres.

We were fortunate to have with us the director of Basra Centre,  Mr Samir Alrikaby, who provided insightful information on the achievements of the Centre’s staff in less than a year since it was opened to serve families in need, orphans and the disabled.  Mr Alrikabi also spoke about the opportunities for job training for unemployed young people based on important agreements with Iraqi universities, as well as opportunities for young people to engage in humanitarian voluntary work.  Mr Alrikaby reviewed some cases of disabled and ill individuals and the support that had been provided to them, such as medicines and medical equipment (wheelchairs etc), which changed their lives for the better.

In closing, Mrs Layla Hussain emphasized that the objective of the event was to remember and support the many hungry and poor people in Iraq, who because of their circumstances may not be celebrating Iftar this particular night.  She sincerely thanked the guests for their participation, and encouraged them to generously support our vital Ramadan Food Basket and EID clothing programmes to feed and clothe the poor.
