The staff of the Center visited families in the district of Al-Zubair to check on their conditions. One of these families was that of the widow Mahdia Saleh Fayyad. Staff had previously visited the family but they did not receive help for some of their principal needs, and during the visit the staff realised that this family is still suffering from extreme poverty and difficult living circumstances.
Due to her husband’s death, the widow supports her six orphan children who range between 10 and 17 years of age. She alone carries the burden of providing for them and raising them. All of the children are students in school, and there are not sufficient funds to pay for their school supplies. One of her children complains of pain in his kidney; he has previously undergone two operations, which have not eased his pain. Due to his physical condition, he no longer sees a doctor, but receives support from the mosque that his mother left him in.
The widow lives with her children in a house with a roof made of corrugated iron which does not stop either the cold or the heat - in short, the family are at the mercy of the winter rains.
They do not have a regular income or any source of employment in order to earn a living and take care of their household or personal needs.
.
The family are in need of:
A monthly sponsorship to the value of £16 (approx. 25,000 IQD)
A medical sponsorship of £32 (approx. 50,000 IQD) for her sick son.
Financial assistance of £125 (approx. 200,000 IQD) in order to buy school supplies for her children.
The staff of Basra Centre implore supporters of the charity to help this vulnerable family escape hardship.
