A nine year-old orphan, Muktada Mohammed Abbas, lives with his four year-old sister Raqiah in their grandfather's house after the death of their parents. The mother died three years ago due to brain cancer and the father some five months later as the result of a shooting incident in Baghdad. The two orphans live now in the care of their grandparents who look after the children in their slum dwelling. Despite his age the grandfather still works so as to provide all of them with the bare necessities of life. They do not receive a care allowance. The grandmother complained about their poverty because their income is not sufficient enough to cover the household costs nor the many needs of the children, in addition to the need for clothes and stationery for the primary school which Muktada attends where he is in the third class.
