Appeal: widow says she and her orphaned children did not have anything to eat the morning of our visit

As part of our routine inspection visits to needy families, we dropped in to see the widow Hayat Mohsin who lives on the outskirts of the city of Najaf with her orphans Baneen and Abdullah. Following the death of their father, there is now no breadwinner for the family. According to Ms Mohsin, she and her children had not had anything to eat that morning prior to the visit which was at 11am.

The house in which they live (as is evident in the photos and video opposite) comprise of a room and a kitchen with makeshift roofs made from metal panels and papyrus. Like many other needy families who live in these slums, this has become a harsh and painful reality from which there is no escape.

They are without a bathroom and other basic necessities such as a refrigerator or an oven. Where these electrical items exist they are ineffective because they do not work.

We would like to note that the walls of Ms Mohsin’s room cannot bear the weight of a roof, and so she is in need of help to purchase a mobile room (caravan) which would cost around $1,400 US Dollars.
