Citizens Advice and Care Centre (Najaf branch) purchase a mobile home for orphans

Iraq-Citizens Advice and Care Centre (Najaf branch)

Under the slogan ‘With your donations and help we will provide housing for homeless’ Najaf Advice Centre provided a mobile home for the two orphans Zainab and Fiqar.

In response to the appeal of two young orphans living in a small makeshift tent, namely Zainab and Fiqar, three generous donors made the dream become true. First, an Iraqi citizen chose to make regular monthly payments to the family of 100,000 Iraqi Dinars. Second, an Iraqi living in the US donated £100 (approximately 180,000 Iraqi Dinars). And last but not least, Ms Rabab from Qatif in Saudi Arabia generously donated £900 (approximately 1,500,000 Iraqi Dinars).

These donations were sufficient to purchase a room measuring 3x3 metres and at the reduced price of 1,700,010 Iraqi Dinars thanks to the seller’s appreciated cooperation.

The orphans’ mother, Ms Bohaira, was consulted about the mobile room and she was so thankful and grateful to hear that. She claimed that it would be like a dream come true, and couldn’t believe that it would happen. After only a few days, the room was purchased and delivered, destined to stand in place of Zainab and Fiqar’s old tent. The room was provided on 25/05/2013 and the following link shows what happened on the day of the transfer, as well as the reactions of the orphans upon its arrival.

It may be noted here that this small feat was possible thanks to the kind contributions of three donors, and we must also thank the efforts of the crane driver who volunteered to transfer the room from factory outlet to its destination free of charge. The service would have cost between 100,000 and 150,000 Iraqi Dinars. In addition to this, there were other donations which went towards purchasing the beds and mattresses.

In the end, this may seem a small achievement in relation to the overall housing situation in the country as a whole, but we see it as the light at the end of a dark tunnel; merely the beginning of greater things to come.

In the same way that a marathon begins with a single step, we hope that with your donations and volunteering, we can achieve the dreams of the poor who have already started to come into our Citizens Advice and Care Centre. They then register their names on the waiting list to be granted interest-free loans with which to buy mobile rooms like the one given to Zainab and Fiqar. They are then able to repay the loans at a rate which suits them.
