Blanket Appeal 2008

After reports of a disastrous wave of snow and cold that swept Iraq in 2008, ICF decided to make an appeal for the donations of blankets for orphans and families in need. We received a swift response raising $7000! We wanted to add a human touch to our humanitarian aid by delivering the blankets to the doorsteps of each family. In such tragic times of need we thought it would be somewhat demoralizing and unfair that people be forced to gather in the cold and fight over their basic human right to be warm. Here is a glimpse of our journey:

With the help of the Samawah Foundation we purchased 483 1st class Blankets. The quality and not quantity of these blankets is what was really important that winter- it is reported that organizations such as the Red Crescent also delivered blankets, but they were not always thick enough- (a seemingly small yet life changing detail in the harsh conditions of that winter). From delivering to the doorsteps of families in Al-Muthanna province we then journeyed across the desert towards the border with Saudi Arabia, delivering blankets to the tents of many nomadic families.

The success of the appeal was evident from the smile on peoples’s faces as we drove back along the routes where the blankets had been delivered. Due to the chaos from years of sanctions and war, the logistics of aid work in Iraq is no easy matter. We are proud that all of our connections and know-how allowed us to put a smile on the faces of families, orphans and other Iraqis in need and we hope that with your help we will be able to do the same again.
