Newsletter June 2007 - Jamaadi'ul Awwal 1428
As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah
Bismillahi rahmaani raheem
Welcome to our June newsletter, and may we start by wishing you warmest
congratulations for the upcoming birth of our most blessed lady Bibi Fatemah
(as). This month has been an extremely busy month for the Trust, both in terms of appeals received and projects undertaken. It is thanks to your generosity that we can continue to serve, and may The Almighty reward all your kindness. As our blessed lady (AS) has said:
Iraq:
* Microfinance Projects: LFT's water tank project and milking buffalo programme both provide income for families, as well fresh, clean drinking water and wholesome milk. Presently, twelve water tanks provide 104 persons with their daily needs, and 86 milking cows supply 910 family members with nutritious milk. Many more families are waiting impatiently to receive either a tank or a cow and thus become self-sufficient. Instead of relying on others, they can even offer services to them. Please, donate generously for this project thereby providing a breadwinner with the means to provide for his family, sending children to school instead of work and
offering a valuable service to the community at large. Read More
* Orphan care: Iraq is the country of orphans. There are no statistics even estimating how many children lost their fathers during the rule of Saddam Hussein, nor since during the violence engulfing the country at the moment. Once the security situation improves, Iraq will need educated young people to rebuild the country. With your donation, you enable these children to complete their education and build a brighter future for themselves as well as their communities. This month, a further 20 orphans have been sponsored in Basra, bringing the total to 110. Read More
* Wheelchair Project: The focus of this project was to assist very needy, disabled persons in Najaf and Karbala. It is estimated that about 100 causalities arise every day in Iraq, as violence continues to spread. The health system in Iraq has suffered gradual deterioration over the past 15 years and is barely able to cope with the demands of emergency and urgent treatments. No program of care for the disabled exists. 67 wheelchairs were purchased to allow some of the victims a little independence, dignity and a chance to be self reliant. Read More
Iran:
* Medical Referral Program: In May 2007, IRAC's MRP funded LFT by extended assistance to 103 patients, forty of whom are patients who had come from Iraq for treatment, while the remaining were Afghan and Iraqi refugees living in Iran. As usual, the incidence of cancer patients was high, and in addition this month assistance was given to a 5-year-old girl suffering from cerebral palsy and unable to walk. After treatment, the girl is now able to walk almost unaided. Thank you for your continued support and assistance. Read More
* Healthcare: Eye examinations for 1,800 children at three schools for Iraqi refugee children were carried out in Qum last month. Many students had multiple problems of vision and it must have been hard for them to study without glasses. Hopefully, all of them will be able to study more comfortably and therefore better than previously in the next school year. Read More
* Education: £3,840 (or just five GBP per student) was required to cover salaries from February to June 2007 at the Imam Mehdi school in Iran. Asking families to pay additional fees would have meant that many students could not continue their studies. Thanks to your generous donations, 772 primary and junior high school students were able to complete their studies without paying additional fees. Read More
* Microfinance: In May 2007, LFT's partner organization in Iran granted a further three milking cows to needy Iraqi refugee in Khuzestan province with LFT funding. Six cows are now feeding 32 people daily; milk and milk products will contribute to the families' nutrition while the income from selling what they don't consume themselves will raise their standard of living. Lebanon:
* Healthcare: This month, the Trust supported two cases. The first was a chemotherapy patient who requires $50-$100 of medication per month, as well as $3,000 to secure a roof over his head. The second was a gentleman who has had prosthetic limbs since 1993. They should be replaced every 2 years, but his economic situation does not allow for this. In addition, his wife needs a double hip replacement.
* Microfinance: LFT received an appeal from it's partner in Lebanon, concerning a fifty-one year old single lady, who is the main breadwinner of her elderly parents and forty-three year old sister. Her father is disabled, and she has donated one of her kidneys to her brother. She currently runs a clothes shop, but in order to generate sufficient income, she needed to diversify the goods in the shop. Merchandise valued at USD 1,100.00 was purchased from four different wholesalers and supplied under the supervision of PADC. Read More
* This month, the Trust assisted a family of 9, who were severely struggling to make ends meet. Four of the six children in the family have cerebral palsy, and the two sisters are now being looked after in PADC's school for special needs children. In addition, LFT purchased equipment to help the father build up his electrical business.
* The Trust has also assisted another family, consisting of a single mother and her four children. Although she works at the local school, she does not have enough income to allow her children to stay with her. LFT assisted with the rent, and a microfinance project to supplement her income, enabling the children to be with their mother.
* The final case we supported was a family being looked after by the 51-year old single daughter. She is the principal assistant at the Al Mahdi school, where 100 students attend. At home, she cares for her 91-year old father, who suffers with acute bed sores due to his immobility. In addition, a sister and a brother who is handicapped depend on her. This case is extremely sad, and PADC have requested $400 per month to assist them.
* Education: In our April newsletter, we reported a case of a pharmacy student whom the Trust assisted to pay her university tuition fees. This term she gained 100% in her end-of-year results.
* The Trust has transferred $25,500 this month to PADC for the care of 64 special needs children from April to September 2007. Read More
India:
* In April, the Trust received an appeal to support 42 destitute students attending St Paul's Nursery, Primary and High School. The institution is engaged in bringing up poor students, giving them the opportunity to obtain professional degrees, and to settle both in India and abroad. The Trust follows the progress of every child and details of performance can be found on the website. Seven students scored 80% or more, and one student scored 95%. In order to encourage the students to do better, LFT will award INR 500.00 to the seven students who scored 80% and INR 1,000.00 to the student scoring 95%. Read More
Pakistan / Kashmir:
* The Trust has recently partnered with the Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust, which provides eye care for impoverished people. Last year, the organization carried out over 148,000 major and minor surgical procedures, as well as providing 1.3 million outpatient consultations and cataract screening. £5,400 was transferred to treat cataract patients in Pakistan (30) and Kashmir (60).
Tanzania:
* Healthcare: The Trust will in sha Allah organize two more eye camps in Pemba and Kondoa before the month of Ramadhan. Each cataract procedure costs $60; please donate generously to this project.
* The Lady Fatemah Trust has been granted Ijaaza by Ayatollah al-Uzma Seyed Ali Seestani to collect Khums money. Please remember we operate on the basis of ZERO% administration costs, so every penny you give goes directly to those in need.
Islamic Humanitarian Service:
* The Trust has entered into an agreement with Islamic Humanitarian Service in Ontario to enable Canadian Citizens to donate to the Trust via a local Charity at ZERO% admin cost. Please contact us for further information. We sincerely thank I.H.S.
