Mother leaves children in Baghdad and travels to Basra to earn a living.
07/03/2018     Help No: H080000339

Hashimiya Kazim lives alone in a weathered and torn makeshift tent on a pavement in Basra!  Eight years ago her husband died leaving her a widow responsible for the provision and upbringing of her daughter and son.  At the time the family was living in Baghdad.  However, in Baghdad she was unable to find a job and earn a living to provide safe housing, food and other basic necessities for her children.

In desperation, she made a brave decision.  She approached her brother to ask if he would take care of her children and she moved to Basra seeking an opportunity to earn a living so that one day she would be able to take care of her children herself.

Staff from Basra Citizens Advice and Care Branch visited Hashimiya, where she was living in her makeshift tent, in order to assess her situation and offer support and advice. They immediately realised that this poor mother, whilst desperate to retain her dignity, was willing to work very hard to support her children.    Alongside her tent, she was making bread and selling her loaves to the passers-by on the pavement.  From the bread sales she was restocking her ingredients, and managing to get by.  Her output was limited due to lack of money, and a very basic small oven.

Hashimiya does not receive any other form of financial support or benefit. The income from her bread sales is all she has.  She is still living in her weathered small tent, but due to the heavy rains, this meagre home is becoming less and less habitable.  Hashimiya needs urgent support to save her from a tragic situation which is developing very quickly.

She urgently needs: -

-              500,000 IQD (approx £300) to buy a caravan to live in.

-              200,000 IQD (approx £120) to buy a large oven (Tanur) to bake her bread

_             300,000 IQD (approx £180) to buy basic household items

_             300,000 IQD (approx £180) to buy basic electrical appliances

Please reach out and help make Hishimiya's ambitions come true so that her and her children may be reunited as a family
