Since June 2006, LFT and IRAC supplement their joint orphan sponsorship program in Qum – Iran by providing a chicken to each of the orphaned families when they pick up their monthly sponsorship. This may look like an almost meaningless gesture without any impact to many, but in reality the significance of this program, while limited, should not be underestimated. Families with limited resources tend to economize on the food budget and protein-rich food like meat, chicken and eggs are among the first to be largely eliminated from the menu due to their cost. While a chicken per family is not a lot, it still goes a long way to ensure that children eat at least one or two nutritious meals per month. Moreover, the eager smiles with which the younger orphans follow the chicken from the freezer to their mother’s bag eloquently tell about the joy they will feel at dinnertime.
The table below shows the number of families who benefited from the program each month in 2007 as well as its cost:
As you can see, it costs about 1.57 GBP to provide a family with a chicken.
In 2008, IRAC intends to extend this program to include sponsored orphans in Ahwaz as well as especially needy patients who receive regular or one-time assistance under its Medical Referral Project in both locations. Please, continue to donate generously so that we can assist more needy families.
