The Lady Fâtemah (a.s.) Charitable Trust
According to a study conducted by the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, every Palestinian child has been exposed to over nine shocking events. The study added that 95.6% of children have seen images of the wounded and dead, and 95% have been affected by the sounds of explosions. The study further indicated that all children have been exposed to some kind of psychological shock whereby 60% of children have experienced moderate psychological shock, 6.7% have experienced minor psychological shock, while 33.3% have experienced major psychological shock. The study indicated that 15.6% suffer from minor post-traumatic disorder, 62.2% suffer moderately, while 20% suffer severely.
The Lady Fatemah Trust, with the help of the donors, is helping these deaf children by giving them the education which is their right and which they deserve.
The following report details the children we are helping.
Child Name: Baraa Tuman (Deaf and Dumb)
Date of Birth: July 3, 2000
Observation: Baraa is a cheerful child, energetic and very intelligent. She gets very good grades and has beautiful handwriting.
Her main method of communication is through the use of sign Language.
Child Name: Ahmed Hamid Abu Amra
Date of Birth: June 3, 2001
Method of communication: Since Ahmed has a certain degree of hearing and can pronounce words quite well, his main method of communication is through talking.
Observation: Ahmed is a very sociable and playful child. He has learned sign language well, but finds difficulty in concentrating in his classes. He can count 1-5 in Arabic and can tell the difference between similar groups. He remembers the signs quickly when he is shown something that reminds him of it i.e. a picture of the sign. Due to family problems he is not being given enough attention at home and the Atfaluna social worker and school counsellor are undertaking extensive counselling for Ahmed.
Teacher Name: Ms. Sumaya Kusa
Child Name: Afnan Awad Al-Arayshi
Date of Birth: 20/06/2001
Method of communication: Sign language as well as speech since the child has a lesser degree of pronunciation
Observation: Afnan is a very energetic, playful and polite child who gets along easily with other children. When Afnan was enrolled at Atfaluna School, she had very poor educational skills. She did not know the alphabet or numbers, and could not write. A special work plan was made for the student to help her learn. She has improved greatly and is learning very fast. Her main problem is that she has difficulty in pronunciation although many efforts have been made to help her.
Child Name: Mohamed Jamal Awad
Date of Birth: 15/12/2000
Method of communication: Sign language, but with much difficulty as he suffers from distress and trauma.
Observation: The child is very quiet and withdrawn and does not participate with any other children. This is because, two years ago, the child was exposed to a trauma. Because of this he does not concentrate in class at all although the teacher continuously gives him the support necessary. The child also has a very bad memory and weak arm muscles where he has great difficulty in holding the pencil and writing. His family is not well trained in dealing with his problems. He cannot use sign language very effectively even though he is being given the necessary support. Special counselling sessions are being undertaken with the help of expert psychologists
Child Name: Abdulla Wahshi Ishtiwi
Date of Birth: 14/03/1998
Abdullah lives in Gaza City and studies in Grade 2 at Atfaluna School. Last year he had communication problems and was unable to keep up with the class. With a lot of support from his teachers at the end of the previous academic year, he started to take part in class and complete his homework. He has now also started to help his class mates during the lesson and has become one of the brighter students in class. Abdullah still needs follow up from his teacher and family in order to continue his success and academic achievements.
