You must avail yourselves of five things before facing five others: life before death; health before illness, leisure before occupation, young days before old days, and wealth before poverty (Prophet Muhammad (saw))
IRAC's MRP assists refugee patients in Iran regardless of nationality, gender, creed and even age. IRAC does not impose an upper age limit because families will feel obliged to pay for medical treatment even if the sick family member is very aged. If they do not receive assistance with treatment cost, the needs of healthy younger family members will not be met because there are no funds left for them. In June 2008, four patients over 70 years of age received assistance with medical expenses. The oldest patient was 84-year-old Mohammad Shibir Moussa who underwent surgery for a cataract.
However, IRAC does allocate some priority to patients under the age of eighteen. Conditions for assistance are less stringent, and young patients are accepted even if they do not fulfill all criteria. This month, IRAC assisted 47 patients who were under 19 years of age. This exceptional high number is due to several factors: Infants are more prone to disease during the summer. Gastro-enteritis as well as pneumonia occurs more often due to the hot weather and the use of rudimentary cooling devices in small and badly ventilated rooms. Young patients with congenital diseases receive treatment during the summer school vacation. School students register for the coming academic year and are asked to perform eye tests to discover myopia. Sadly, not all young patients suffered from seasonal diseases or were treated for congenital ailments. Six young patients came from Iraq to receive treatment for a brain tumor.
With 148 assisted patients, this month has been the busiest ever for IRAC's MRP. 57 Afghan and 29 Iraqi refugee patients received assistance with treatment cost. The remaining 62 patients had come from Iraq to receive medical treatment in Iran.
During the summer months, more patients arrive from Iraq than in winter, when weather conditions are unfavorable and the roads may be blocked by snow. IRAC's MRP has become well-known inside Iraq by word of mouth. Many patients include IRAC's assistance when calculating how much funds they will need to pay for their treatment. Iraqi and Afghan refugees in Iran count on assistance from IRAC' MRP for many years now.
Dear LFT donors: Please continue to enable us to assist these poor patients.
Signed: Management IRAC, Iran
