Unemployment stands at more than eighteen per cent in Iraq. In rural regions, there are few job opportunities and farmers with little land cannot make ends meet. LFT's project to provide milking cows to low-income, rural families has shown great success for many years in different countries. LFT is implementing this project in the rural regions around Basrah for almost two years now. Fifteen families have so far been provided with a milking cow, and follow-up visits showed that income from selling milk and milk products amounts to between 150,000 and 200,000 Iraqi Dinar (ca 125 to 165 USD) per month.
A further three families have received milking cows in July 2008. Two of the new beneficiaries are in their early forties and have young children. In addition to providing an income, especially the children will benefit from regular consumption of fresh milk and milk products. The third beneficiary, 61-year-old Saleh Hameed Jom'ah, heads a family of twelve, among them eight children and grandchildren. Due to abject poverty, none of the children is able to attend school. LFT's representative encourages school attendance and hopes that at least some of Saleh's children and grandchildren who are of school age will return to school this fall.
