Education Appeal from very poor families
01/09/2008

Education Appeal from very poor families,

children whose parents are HIV positive and children who have lost one or both parents.

The Tanzanian charity IZAAS was founded nine years ago by the Tanzanian businessman Brother Raza Fazel. IZAAS cares for orphans and abandoned children, accepts appeals for medical treatment, provides amputees with artificial limbs and generally tries to respond to every need that is brought to its attention.

One of its important activities is the sponsorship of needy school students. In many parts of Tanzania , there are no public schools and children need to pay school fees. Realizing that a sound education is maybe the best tool one can provide for a poor child, IZAAS sponsors the education of children from very poor families, children whose parents are HIV positive and children who have lost one or both parents.

Among the children requiring sponsorship are Hamza Jamali and Kulsoom Eessa. Hamza is seven years old and has lost his mother and elder brothers in an accident. They died in front of his eyes when lightning struck, while they were busy farming their plot of land. Hamza and his father survived, but Hamza's father soon remarried and abandoned his son. Hamza grows up in IZAAS's orphanage and attends a local school.

Kulsoom Eessa lost her father when she was only one year old.  Five years later, she lives with her mother and four siblings in one small room. The family is so poor that on some days, they cannot afford to eat. Kulsoom's mother knows the pain of illiteracy only too well and is worried what will happen to Kulsoom if she does not get a basic education. Therefore, she applied to IZAAS for assistance with the school fees.

Fortunately, IZAAS already found sponsors for Hamza and Kulsoom, but 104 other children with similar fates are in urgent need of someone who pays their school fees for the second term of the 2008 academic year, lasting from July to December, so that they can continue to study.

IZAAS believes that it is best to leave the children in the schools they are accustomed to and which are close to their homes. For this reason, children from more than 40 different schools are receiving assistance. IZAAS also believes that children and young adults of any age should be supported to continue their education. Therefore, the list below contains the names of children studying in all educational phases from nursery school to university. IZAAS supports children regardless of their ethnic origin and religion. 44 girls and 60 boys are in need of assistance. 80 children will attend primary school, 21 children high school, one beneficiary is a university student, one student attends a vocational course and one student studies Islamic sciences.

It costs only 5 GBP to sponsor a child for a month. For a mere 30 GBP, a child will study for six months and receive a school uniform.
