IRAC, Appeals to LFT Donors to Donate for Cholera Prevention Program

LFT's Partner Organization in Iraq, IRAC, Appeals to LFT Donors to Donate for Cholera Prevention Program

The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

"It is better to spend a Dirham on prevention than a Qintar on treatment."

Cholera, a dangerous and highly contagious disease, is raising its ugly head all over Iraq. 300 cases have been confirmed nation-wide, 26 of which were located in Karbala. However, more than 1000 other cases showed symptoms of Cholera in Karbala alone and are hence considered dubious. So far, no centralized prevention efforts are under way in Iraq.

Since 2003, LFT works together with the Iraqi Aid Committee (IRAC) striving to assist the deprived strata of the Iraqi people. The establishment of a charity eye clinic, income-generating projects, an orphan sponsorship program and relief distributions are among the projects implemented jointly by LFT and IRAC.

In the current situation, it is of utmost importance to proceed quickly to protect the most vulnerable Iraqis in the affected areas from cholera and thus halt the spread of the disease. Therefore, IRAC immediately began to allocate whatever funding was available to purchase water sterilization tablets and jerry cans to distribute among the poor families under its care. A visit to the Ministry of Health directorate in Karbala showed that more needs to be done. While no cholera cases appeared so far in the city itself, some of the surrounding rural districts were affected. People there are forced to drink the insufficiently treated tap water or well water that is not purified at all. Cholera spreads through polluted water. Countless children as well as men and women, many of them weakened by malnutrition, chronic disease or age, are exposed to the threat of cholera. In these rural areas, it is difficult to obtain water sterilization tablets and many families would not be able to afford them even if they were available. As shown in the picture, families are attempting to sterilize water by exposing it to the sun. The situation in Najaf, Kut and Basrah is similar.

IRAC devised an emergency program to protect 20,000 families from cholera for a month by distributing a box containing 100 water sterilization tablets and a jerry can to contain the sterilized water to each family.

The cost of this project will be as follows:

Due to the nature of this project, IRAC will carry all administrative and follow-up cost from its own funds. More than 20 persons known to IRAC have already volunteered to work as distributors.

Dear LFT donors: Please, donate towards this project to the best of your ability. In addition to saving eight persons from contracting cholera with a box of tablets costing only 2 USD, you will also contribute to halting the spread of the disease and indirectly saving countless others, maybe even communities in neighbouring countries, from being exposed to this deadly disease.
