Bismillahi rahmaani raheem

Dear LFT readers, Assalamun Alaykum and welcome to this month's newsletter. It has once again been extremely busy for the Trust, and we thankyou for all for support .

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (2:186)

Ramadhan Iftaar Relief:

During the holy month of Ramadhan, Muslims worldwide try to attain nearness to Allah through increased obedience to His commands. One of the benefits of fasting is to remember those who are less fortunate and experience the pangs of hunger all year round. If we are challenged by fasting from dawn to dusk, what must be the feeling of those who are always struggling to put food on the table? Thanks to your generosity, LFT sent Iftaar relief to Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Gaza, and Tanzania this year. With funding from LFT, IRAC Iran distributed a food basket containing basic food items to 1,424 needy Iraqi and Afghan refugee families comprising 5,152 individuals in Iran. Read More.

Food baskets were distributed to 3,329 extremely needy families comprising 18,491 individuals in five Iraqi cities; Karbala, Najaf, Al Kut, Basra and Baghdad. Read More

150 (507 individuals) were given food baskets in 21 villages in South Lebanon Read More, and in Afghanistan, 750 people were provided with Iftaar every day at an orphanage in Ghazni, Read More.

  • Orphan care:

LFT and IRAC run a joint orphan sponsorship program for 210 Iraqi and Afghan refugee children in Iran. Orphaned refugee children do not have extended family to rely upon for material and emotional report. The only person who can support them is their mother, and widowed refugee women are at a great disadvantage when it comes to providing for their families, and finding work is in most cases not possible. Refugee families who lost their male bread winners have to rely on assistance from charitable individuals and organizations for survival. Orphan sponsorship programs are therefore of utmost importance for such families; we urge you please to continue to support these orphans. Read More

Iraq:

  • Orphan care:

There are an estimated 8.5 million women in Iraq aged 15 - 80. Of these women, about 1 in 6 is a widow or a divorcee. They have no dependable source of income to support themselves or to support their children. Widows are often also responsible for the care of elderly family members as well. There is great competition for the few jobs available in Iraq, and many women do not have the relevant skills or experience. If a widow does get employment, then who will care for her children while she is at work? Who can guarantee her safety as she travels to and from work? Please dear LFT donors, give these orphaned children some hope for their future, and support our orphan sponsorship scheme. It cost's just £15 (US$30.00) per month to look after one orphan; that's just 50p per day. US$ 29,000.00 was transferred to Iraq during the month of October. Read More

  • Healthcare:

In the recent past, Cholera cases have appeared in many regions of Iraq and a number of people have died from the disease. Cholera is a disease that spreads alarmingly fast through pollution of drinking water and even a few cases can very quickly lead to an epidemic in unfavourable conditions. Conditions in Iraq are conducive to the spread of this disease, as water purification plants do not work properly and many people drink water from un purified sources. Only the select few can afford to purchase bottled water.  The best way to deal with an outbreak of Cholera is to immediately establish preventive measures and this involves individual households disinfecting their drinking water by adding sterilization tablets.  However, many people are struggling to survive and are unable to purchase sterilization tablets. In an emergency measure, LFT in conjunction with IRAC intends to distribute a box containing 100 sterilization tablets as well as a jerry can per family to a total of 20,000 families residing in Karbala, Najaf, Kut and Basrah. Please contribute toward this project which will not only protect individual families but will also contribute to protecting the community at large from the spread of a deadly disease that is beginning to show signs of turning into an epidemic. • Karbala Eye Clinic:

We have received an appeal from the Karbala Eye Clinic which Alhamdulillah functions as a non profit charitable institution, serving the needs of the poor. A sum of $8,193 is currently required for the clinic, to carry out essential repairs and rent for the new location. Please give generously towards the clinic, which since its establishment in 2003, has steadily progressed to becoming a major centre for treatment of ophthalmologic diseases in Iraq. 23,973 patients have been treated from January 2006 to January 2008.

  • Education:

An appeal has been received to support two students complete their university education, which they have been unable to do so because of the Saddam regime. They require $100-$150 for 8 months initially.

16 sewing machines have been given to 16 needy girls/women under the microfinance scheme, and on November 4th they will graduate from the fifth sewing training course held by IRAC, in conjunction with LFT. These women can now earn their income with dignity. Another 14 women are due to receive sewing machines this week, inshallah.

Lebanon:

  • Microfinance:

An appeal has been received from a divorced 40year old lady who has four children, and also looks after her elderly parents. She wants to start her own clothes/cosmetic business to support her family, since her parents are retired, and three children are at school and one is at university.

  • Education:

The Philanthropic Association for Disabled Care (PADC) is a charitable institution working with disabled children in South Lebanon. In the rehabilitation centre in the southern town of Nabatiyah, children receive speech therapy, physiotherapy, psycho-motor training and occupational therapy. Since February 2007, LFT has helped provide treatment for 94 children with severe disabilities, and completely transformed their lives. US$ 41,756.09 has been transferred to cover the cost of treating these children from January to September 2008.

After implementing the Iftar project, the LFT Lebanon team has started working to assess the students' needs in public schools in Kafaroman, where the children are extremely hard working, but in need of assistance. The education proposal is in three phases: 66 students initially who need stationary and uniform, then 34 nursery children, and finally high school students who need help with registration fees/ books/stationary. We will keep you updated with this appeal in due course.

Palestine:

  • Microfinance:

A microfinance appeal has been received from our partner organisation in Gaza, following our support with Ramadhan iftaar relief. While visiting some of the students' homes, social workers reported that many poor families did not have anything to eat and every day they waited for the goodwill people to provide them with something to eat. Hence, the appeal is to assist 71 families with chicken or rabbit raising projects, which will be a good form of income generation.  They can eat the chicken's meat and eggs or the rabbit's meat, and at the same time sell chicken, rabbits and eggs and use the income in buying other necessary food items. $5,000.00 has been transferred to assist 10 families so far, and we urge you to donate towards this project so we can help the remainder of the needy families earn their living in dignity.
