Distribution of Food Items to the Neediest Families of Deaf Students of Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, Gaza, Palestine
80 Families with 660 members mostly unemployed benefited
On September 18, 2008, Atfaluna received a bank transfer in the amount of US$ 12,000.00 from the Lady Fatemah (a.s) Charitable Trust to implement a project named "Distribution of Food to the Neediest Families of Deaf Children". This donation was made as a reply to Atfaluna's request to provide the families of deaf children with food items in order to help them eat balanced and nutritious meals during the month of Ramadan. In the Gaza Strip, with 70% unemployment, a destroyed economy, large families struggling to survive, and very high cost of living, buying food becomes almost impossible for many people. In addition, Atfaluna social work department reported that most of our students, in addition to their deafness, belong to very poor families where having food, clothes and shelter is only a wish for many of them. Moreover, while visiting some of the students' homes, social workers reported that many families did not have anything to eat and every day they waited for the goodwill people to provide them with anything to eat.
Upon receiving the donation, a project manager was appointed to monitor the project implementation and prepare all financial and administrative documents needed for the project. The social workers prepared a list which included 80 families and their related information. The families were selected according to the criteria which stated that each family had to have one or more deaf students in Atfaluna school, and it had to be poor with no sources of income or very low income. The list of names was checked and approved by the project manager; meanwhile, Atfaluna financial department started the process of purchasing the food items which included meat, chicken, oil, spices, flower, sugar ....etc. The distribution of food to families took place in Atfaluna on September 23, 24, and 25. Information about Lady Fatemah trust was given to the beneficiary families and leaflet containing the name, logo and location of LFT was stamped on each food package.
