Conflict in DR Congo Appeal

The brutal conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced an estimated 250,000 civilians to flee their homes.  They join one million people already displaced by previous fighting, into several overcrowded camps, raising the possibility of a humanitarian disaster.

Aid agencies are struggling to cope with extra demand for food, clean water, shelter and medicines, made worse by the escalating violence in the eastern part of the country.

Along with the lack of resources, fighting between various factions, intent on controlling the mineral wealth of the country, have made conditions for civilians and aid workers increasingly dangerous.

Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) are an umbrella organisation for 13 humanitarian aid agencies including: ActionAid ,British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern, Help the Aged, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund, and World Vision.

At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.
