You must avail yourselves of five things before facing five others: life before death; health before illness, leisure before occupation, young days before old days, and wealth before poverty (Prophet Muhammad (saw))

For poor refugee families, disease can be far more debilitating than for families who live in their own country under average economic conditions. Three case histories taken from IRAC’s MRP patient list for the month of October illustrate this:
Childhood diabetes is a serious condition in any country. However, in developed countries, the disease is usually diagnosed before diabetic coma sets on. Eight-year-old Afghan refugee Fereshteh Hezareh was not so lucky. Her diabetes went undetected until she was admitted to the emergency ward in a semi-conscious condition. Under the untiring efforts of doctors and nurses, her situation finally improved. However, her father and mother just exchanged one worry for another when they discovered that the hospital bill amounted to a staggering 11 Million Rial (ca 687 GBP). With help from IRAC and another charity and a substantial discount from the hospital, financial disaster was averted and the smiles returned to the faces of Fereshteh (whose name means “angel” in Farsi) and her parents when they finally left the hospital.
In developed countries, a hernia is hardly considered a serious or debilitating condition. Hernias are easily curable by routine surgery. However, for Afghan refugees who work as laborers being afflicted with a hernia can cause a major crisis in their lives. With their hernia making it impossible for them to work, how are they going to raise the money for surgery? As hospitals usually reciprocate IRAC’s assistance with giving a similar amount as a discount, the cost of surgery for the refugee can be halved if IRAC pays about one fourth of the cost and will thus become manageable for the refugee. This month, two Afghan refugees in the prime of life were cured of hernias with IRAC’s help.
Ameneh Hashemi lost her husband six years ago to undiagnosed leukemia and was left to care for three orphans aged six, eight and twelve. Ameneh’s only son Mohammad, aged twelve when his father passed away, is blind. However, Ameneh did not lose hope and managed to provide for her children as a seamstress working from her home until disaster struck: Ameneh was severely burned in an accident and became unable to work. She was introduced to IRAC by the hospital social worker and now receives orphan sponsorship in addition to assistance with treatment cost until she will be able to work again.
It takes so little to turn around a life: On average, these four patients needed a mere 55 GBP each of assistance.
Dear LFT donors: Every month, many desperate patients apply to IRAC’s offices. Often, it costs only a few pounds to help them back to financial independence. Please, do not forget your less fortunate Muslim brothers and sisters as they will not forget you in their prayers.
