General Information about the District:

Dera Ismail Khan is one of the 24th districts in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan . Headquarter of the district is the town of Dera Ismail Khan. The district has an area of 7,326 km and a population of about 853,000 out of which the Muslims are about 200,000 (0.2 million).

The district of Dera Ismail Khan is bounded on the east by Punjab province, to the southwest by South Waziristan district, and to the northwest by Tank and Lakki Marwat districts.

District Dera Ismail Khan is backward area with most of the population lives below poverty line. Despite being situated on the bank of Indus River , the area is dry and very hot.

The city lacks basic urban infrastructure. There is very little agriculture and virtually no industries.

History of Sectarian Violence and Miseries of  Muslims:

Dera Ismail Khan is a flashpoint for aggressive anti-Muslim sentiment. Recent waves of violence started in late 1980s when ethnic cleansing of our community began in a systematic manner. During the last eight years, Dera Ismail Khan has seen worst wave of violence during hundreds of people have been assassinated in targeted killings and bomb blasts. The victims have included prominent professionals such as doctors, engineers, professors, businesspersons and other notables.

The effect of such targeted killings has been that many prominent  Muslim families have been forced to migrate from Dera Ismail Khan. Those who have remained in Dera Ismail Khan, live in an atmosphere of extreme fear. Members of the  Muslim community have reportedly had to take unprecedented precautions. Those who can afford extra protection live surrounded by security guards while ‘Majalis’ and other occasions of ‘Azadari’ regularly take place surrounded by the fear of armed attacks and bomb blasts.

The situation of security has worsened to the extent that notable persons are being surveiled/chased and targeted in other cities hundred miles away from Dera Ismail Khan. This happened very recently on November 16, 2008 in Peshawar where a notable businessperson from DI Khan was targeted. Three young men were targeted on October 29, 2008 in the vicinity of the city who were out on picnic.

Present Situation and Recent Violence

These days city of Dera Ismail Khan is going through a grave situation which cannot be described in words. Following are some glimpses of the way  Muslims are being targeted:

  • Every day prominent people receive threats of killings by members of the Taliban and other anti-Muslim groups. Since the beginning of 2008, hardly any week has passed without a few reported cases of martyrdom of  Muslims either in targeted killings or in bomb blasts.

  • According to information that we have compiled, since August until now, at least 58  Muslims including two doctors, a businessperson, and a prominent government servant have become the victims of targeted killings.

  • August 19 this year was one of the worst days in the history of  Muslims of Dera Ismail Khan. After a young  Muslim was killed, his family members took his body to the local hospital. There, a suicide bomber killed 43 people all belonging to the  Muslim community. These included 14 people from the same family. In this blast, one person lost all his six sons.

  • During last decade, hundreds of children became orphans as their fathers’ embraced martyrdoms. These orphans are continuing their education from primary schools to university level and are in great need of sponsorship / scholarships.

  •  Muslims are under great psychological pressure. Their businesses have collapsed. Those who can afford are migrating to other cities in Punjab , like Bhakkar / Mianwali. A member of parliament was targeted in Bhakkar city ( Southern Punjab ) for helping the bereaved families. Thank God, he had a narrow escape but 20 innocent embraced Shahadat.
