Appeal to assist the victims of the East African Drought

Did you know…

That vast parts of Eastern Africa are in the grip of one of the worst drought the regions has seen. The drought has affected parts of Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Estimates of those affected range from 25 to 32 million people.

One of the countries worst affected by the drought is Kenya where some 3.8 million people, a tenth of the population, need emergency aid. In certain regions food prices have spiralled to five times the average. Malnutrition is now above emergency levels in some areas and hundreds of thousands of valuable cattle are dying.  This affects the

Some victims are surviving on two litres of water a day in some places. The average American uses 550 litres of water per day.

The conditions have never been so harsh or so inhospitable, and the victims are calling for your help to survive.

The Lady Fatemah (as) Charitable Trust has transferred US$5,000 to a partner organisation working with the victims of the tragedy in and around villages such as Ukumbani, a village 200 kilometres from Mombasa in Kenya . The staple crop of maize will be distributed to the victims.

The cost of this relief effort is approximately US$20 per month. The LFT has committed to assisting 250 individuals and with your continued support can assist many more.

In memory of the hunger and thirst of the martyrs of Karbala you may pledge to support a typical family of five individuals for £65 or US$100 per month. To pledge a month’s support to a whole locality the cost would be £4,400 or US$7,000. This would afford a respite to these impoverished individuals until the next rains arrive later this year.
