An Iraqi Widow (who’s identity we cannot disclose for security reasons) approached the Head of our ICF Office in Baghdad showing her interest to take out a loan from the ICF Charity Bank for Small Businesses so that she could take part in our first project: The Power of The Sewing Machine.
Despite her own trying circumstances and the daily hardships that she had to endure, she was passionate and determined to obtain a sewing machine like she had seen the other women in her area do. Not only did she want to start up her own business to support herself and her family, but she was adamant to do something really positive and innovative to better the community around her. Having heard that one of the Hospitals in Baghdad was low on basic post-natal medical equipment, she planned to sew her own design of Carry Cots for new born infants. On hearing this adventurous idea, our Baghdad Representative Walid Alwaan got in contact with the Chair of a recognised Woman’s Organisation in Baiyaa, who confirmed that the lady in question was more than capable and that with their connections with the local Hospital the project was sure to succeed...
However, during the series of Baghdad bomb blasts during December 2010 , the widow’s Brother died (God rest his soul) and her son was also badly injured. The sheer grief and tragedy of these circumstances has prevented this good hearted lady to be able to support herself, let alone the desperate community around her.
We published this story as an example of the many challenges that come up against people wanting to do good in Iraq, as we want to show how the process of delivering aid and re-building communities is seriously hindered.
