Our Welfare Rights Centre for People with Disabilities in Najaf has been officially recognised as the most active registered charity of the region thanks to our passionate and experienced staff working hard on the ground to raise awareness for people with disabilities. Changing social attitudes of people with disabilities in Iraq is the first step for bringing about a real change, but that hasn’t stopped our staff from doing all they can to make sure that these people are dealt with fairly, today.
Mrs Ali, a woman living nearby our centre, turned to us for help when she received unexpected news that her husband’s disability allowance from the government had been suspended with no warning or reason. As her husband is unable to work, they rely heavily on these benefits, without which they would find extreme difficulty to survive.
Due to the instability of the political situation in Iraq, Mr and Mrs Ali felt that their security was threatened and they did not know what to do. We assured her that we would do everything we possibly could to find out why this had happened, and that we would try and fix the problem. After our efforts in dealing with the council, we finally got to the bottom of it and managed to reinstate Mr Ali’s benefits as of the 5th of December 2010.
The couple thanked us for our work and the support that our free services offer to local people with disabilities.
We would also like to thank Mr and Mrs Ali for confiding in us and giving us the opportunity to stand up for Iraqis living with a disability.
